The Melbourne Cup

The Melbourne Cup

A Poem by David Lewis Paget
"

A little humour never goes astray.

"

That's it, I quit! I'm through, straight up!

Once more, I flunked the Melbourne Cup!
I'll go and sit where dunces sit,
And swear this time that that is it!

That bloody horse that weaved on through
To snatch the cup, some name like 'View',
I never even saw it there
It wasn't on the list, I swear!

I think they subbed it in at dawn
So punters wouldn't know its form,
Then hid it 'til the race was run
Confusing almost everyone.

Now every year it's been the same
Since 'Think Big' blew them all away,
They suck us in to have a punt
Then pull them, and let through a runt.

It's one great big conspiracy
To part me from my shekel tree,
But that's the end, and that I swear...
(I wonder who will win next year?)

Well, I certainly found your writing clear, that the Melbourne Cup is for horse racing. I love the intonation in the first stanza. By the last, however, I doubt that you have truly given up. The last question of "I wonder who will win next year?" leads me to think you had an emotional tirade; and once past, you will be back at it again.

This one is shorter than the others I have read but just as enjoyable nonetheless.

Sorry folks - not a sailboat race, a horse race. One of the biggest in the world, actually. I thought it would have been beamed to America so you'd all be familiar with it, but it seems not. I did however think that the lines -
'That bloody horse that weaved on through
To snatch the cup, some name like 'View','
would have given the game away. Anyway, with 24 runners, it's one of the hardest races to pick, and I certainly didn't get it. As a matter of interest, the trifecta paid $22,000, and the Pick 4 - $530,000.

This is wonderful. I have always had a stange facination for the running of the Melbourne Cup. Completely out of my box. Am I thinking right? Is it the sailboat races you are talking about here? Hey, what the heck ... I say go for it again next year. Very enjoyable read my friend.

Blessings,
Lesa
