Goddo & Me

Goddo & Me

A Poem by David Lewis Paget
"

Perhaps people are just a side-issue....

"

‘He slept through the Paleozoic Age,
He yawned through Neanderthal Man,
When dinosaurs walked, he was fixing a hole
In the floor of the Sea of Japan,
When Lincoln was making your favourite speech
He was out with a spanner, near Mars,
Adjusting some angle, inclined to the sun,
And admiring his favourite Stars.’

‘It was fun in those days, when he used to display
An amazing addiction to Math,
His Geometry, angles, and parallel spangles
He’d scatter whilst running his bath;
His compass, divider and measuring tools
I would hide, with the keys to his locks,
When questioned, he’d say that he’d need them today
For precessing the Equinox.’

‘I never thought much of mechanical things,
I left all that headwork to him,
I wanted some other distraction for me
So he gave me Original Sin;
He made me an Adam, then added an Eve
And he left me to play - (on my terms);
I sent them an Avatar Serpent to tempt,
And an apple, corrupted with worms.’

‘He left me alone for a while, I suppose,
While adjusting Orion, its Belt,
For thousands of years I played havoc with those
Who thought Eve was spelt Evil - Misspelt!
The trouble began when he came back again
And he saw what I’d done to his art,
That stuff about tempting his son, I declare
It was innocent fun - Cross my heart!’

‘Now lately he seems to be old, and he’s tired
And he sleeps while the engine goes round,
When he wakes and he knuckles his rheumy old eyes,
I just tell him the planet is sound.
But cyclones and earthquakes and floodings and droughts
Are my special pet projects, you see;
I hate to be bored, and it’s only good sport
For the likes of old Goddo and me.’

Dear David,

This is the second poem of yours that I have put on my 'reading list'.

I need more time to devour your treats and will do so in a more leisurely manner....you know, sitting comfortably, with a drink in my hand (coke) and some nibblees.

Let the curtain go up and the fun begin!

Later...

I have enjoyed every single piece I have read of yours, and this is no exception.. It is actually my new FAVORITE.. your story telling ability is sublime and your flow is always impeccable.. It allows the reader to get fully immersed in the story.. the rhymes make it playful and pleasant, and always love the fun tone in each one.. with a little humor thrown in there makes it so delightful.. breathtaking as always.. I am a huge fan..

Yup Tate sent me here too. This is one theme I don't think I've read of yours before winding God through out the fabric of the story. I found it on the surface to be a light hearted romp - but it has some depth and some teeth to it. I think many think this way - that God is old and tired...
Found it a thought provoking, intelligent write.

Tate requested i read this poem ..Tate is such an earthy honest young man i have no reason to turn away from his requests ... really glad i did .. i love your poem .. its solid and classical and deals with something older than dirt and as new as this moment .. enjoy the humor .. the admission of a Grand Master at the controls ... a tricky jokester that can play the fool ... love your poem ..its got everything ..bones, blood, flesh and spirit .. nice one!

A believable alternate theory which is as strong in narration as the known ones. The power of words can create another world and David you do achieve this feat quite often. Thanks for inviting.

Now this is a different take on things. Sympathy for the devil. Sort of like the Rolling Stones. This is more playful.
