This Is The Way

This Is The Way

A Poem by David Lewis Paget
"

for my brother...

"

As I recall, when we were young

And life the refrain of a song, unsung,
We’d walk in the glare of the winter white
And dream sweet dreams,
         sweet dreams at night.

And many’s the time that I’ve seen you fall
And hurt so much that you hurt us all;
Ah, those were the days that were lost and won,
When we were young,
         when we were young.

But now, with families of our own
It’s hard to believe how the years have flown
For still we struggle from day to day
But half a world
         And a world away.

And still we stagger, and still we fall,
And still the hurt will hurt us all
For these are the days that are lost and won
And this is the way
The song is sung…
