Winterspray

Winterspray

A Poem by David Lewis Paget
"

'The Birds' were the Air Force Neptunes standing in line at 10 Sqn., Townsville, Qld.

"

It’s cold and damp in the light of day

The birds are gaunt, and tall and grey,
I walk the line to the sound of my mind
And the wind that clatters away…
I should be sad for I never know
Why the feeling sweeps me over so,
But ever a breeze will come my way
Like a breath of you in the winterspray.

The countryside is a green, they say
That you only see in the month of May,
The beat of mine is a bitumen line,
Of black, and a murky grey.
The wind whips eddies of powder rain
To the haunting sound of an old refrain,
And many’s the thought that, day by day
I have of you in the winterspray.
