![]() The Mother of My LifeA Poem by David Lewis Paget![]() The man's side of the abortion issue.![]() So you told your closest friends that you’re The mother of my life, that you’ve made the
Great decision, (though you’re not my lawful wife),
And I heard in saddened silence how your heart
(Behind the words), beat a rapid hesitation as
Your resolution stirred.
But you smiled and chattered gaily in the
Innocence of play, as my throat refused to
Yield a single word I thought to say;
Will you love this life,
Be my lover, be my wife,
Will you say again tomorrow
You’re the mother of my life?
For my seed is deep within you at the
Stirring of the dawn, will you hold my seed
Within you ‘til the day our child is born?
Will you cherish, (as you say you cherished
Love that put it there), will it perish in your
Hesitation, lost beyond a care?
Will you make a firm decision, be it aye
Or be it nay, in the shades of Caesar’s Legions
Let this gladiator say;
As you love this land,
Love this life, this heart and hand,
Will you scatter forth the seed
Or be the mother of a man?
