What Happens?

What Happens?

A Poem by David Lewis Paget

What happens to love that’s neglected,

What happens with absence of care,

When only the shrug of indifference

Is left for you both to share.

What happens when neither will reach on out

To touch, or caress or to hold,

Or eyes never meet when you pass in the street

There’s a shrivelling up of the soul.

And the taste of the past is like ashes,

While the memories gone are like dust,

Growing deeper with time as it passes

To bury attraction and lust.

And you wonder about the excitement

That you felt at the moment you met,

Was that a mirage, is the desert so large

That your heart remains lost in it yet?

When the days stretch ahead, and are endless

That you fear there will be no respite,

Are you under a curse, could it be any worse

With your tears on the pillow at night?

When you put a brave face on each morning,

And you nod to each other, then go,

But pray life will not be extended,

What happens? I think that you know!

I like this, but that last line doesn't seem to belong here at all to me.

Over great structure and intrigue building on your subject and title.

Love isn't always clear or understanding and sometimes when one lover feels betrayed --they become violent towards the other person. Often it is a simple misunderstanding or loss of communication between the couple. Other times, it is an outsider creating the drama and hurt between a couple.

This is not your customary story ballad, but tells of something very deep. When iove is truly ost, there's no way to get it back.

What happens?
Probably a divorce.
Maybe an affair.
Or both.

Love left neglected leaves a hollow ache in the soul. The mold of remorse creeps over until all joy disappears beneath the blight of darkness. The heart, however, ever loves, wants to love, desires to be loved, and stands irreducible beneath the pain of it all. I know this poem well, its words flowing in my veins; and yet, I still go on loving. I don't know any other way.

I've been away for a while and am surprised to find an introspective poem such as this from you. It's a rarity.

This is uncharacteristically melancholy and introspective for you. It is a sad thing when love is lost. This one is very emotive.

The state of indifference is draining , it lessens the value of you. Leaving deep holes in our core, in our souls, and nothing invitings in view. Where is the joy and the pleasures, what happened to everything sweet? Why did the magic forsake us, and where are the eyes that would meet.....Sometime we must bend, for the saving, if not,on the mend, relationships end, and nothing is left, But defeat! Life as we knew it is over, cried us a tear, maybe more, while still on our feet,we face our resolve, and beating a dead horse is o'er.....
Sorry for the attempts at rhyme, Sir David......it happens all the time!!
