Drama Queen

Drama Queen

A Poem by David Lewis Paget

She sat at the edge of the second floor,

‘I’m going to jump!’ she cried,

He stood well back from the balcony,

‘You lied,’ she said, ‘you lied!

You swore we’d marry before the Spring

That I’d always be with you…’

‘I didn’t promise you anything,

It’s not what I want to do!’

‘Well, why did you lead me on,’ she said,

‘Did you want to break my heart,

I’ll fling myself from this building if

We’re going to be apart.’

‘I’ve got a lot of living to do

Before I take a wife,

You said that you’d never tie me down,

That you wanted to live your life.’

‘I wanted to live my life with you

Is all that I really meant,

But now you’re twisting my words, you want

To set up an argument.’

He said, ‘You’re getting hysterical,

I think that you ought to jump,’

Took one step back, and lifted his foot,

Then planted it in her rump.

She flew off the top of the doll’s house

And sat squat on the gravel drive,

Just as her mother motored up,

‘I see that you’re still alive!’

His father wandered from out the door

And waved to her mother, Gwen,

‘I thought I could trust you two out here,

I see what you’re doing, Ben!’

‘I think she’s been watching the Soaps again,

She’s always the drama queen,

What have you said to Ben,’ said Gwen,

‘He’s just as bad,’ said Deane.

‘What have you got to say for yourself,

Apologise to Gwen!’

‘She said that she wanted to marry me,

But she knows that I’m only ten!’

What a cute, playful, story- that had me smiling, eagerly anticipating, and giggling throughout.. It is told with the sweet innocence of youth, and the silliness that accompanies.. The flow is exquisite, the rhythm and rhyming add to the lightheartedness of it, and the imagery amusing.. I thoroughly enjoyed this amazing piece of poetic storytelling.. You are truly talented..

Ah, the youth of it all and those kids that play 'house' so to speak. What a cutsie story you have here. So playful and had me chuckling in some parts. Always an absolute pleasure reading your rhyming, poetic stories.

I absolutely adore this as it tells a compelling story - and then we learn it is of children, playing adult games..LOL
You had me totally hooked thinking the poor dear had been jilted until the doll house jump, but then again, I think we are all children at heart - even when we shouldn't be!
Another great story David!!

Well I can see why she would be do upset! He did break a strong commitment, after all- and she in such a hurry, alas . . . Perhaps, if she waits a bit for him to mature to her level, it will work. Not everyone can be as dignified as she is.

Loved the humor in the lines of this one...
goes quite well with the sizzler of an ending...
good to read another scripted and well-versed story line...

It is one little journey which finishes in a surprise ending like most of your works. But it's the constant agony which some of women bring from the very early age, the manipulation and power struggle starts quite early to show up. But not all women are the same but quite a chunk of them are. They leave non-cognizable scars on a mans psyche but the torment is unspeakable and that can be represented only in poems like this.
