To Our Readers on WC

To Our Readers on WC

A Poem by David Lewis Paget

When you settle down with your night-light on

And you face the computer screen,

Then point your mouse to the world-wide web

For an evening of dust and dreams,

You leave a trail like a silver snail

Though you crawl through the sites unseen,

And read what’s free on WC,

But the writers should know you’ve been.

You’d not sneak into a movie show

Without first paying your due,

So why would you come to our house of fun

Then leave, not write a review?

Each writer’s writing to entertain

Not asking for gold or cash,

But likes to hear what the readers think

So why not give it a bash?

There’s only ten in a hundred write

With ninety sneaking away,

Are you the one that remains unseen,

Or one of the ten today?

It’s not that we want a thesis, nor

A screed for a Ph.D.,

We’re quite content with a friendly face

To add to our family.

Don’t be afraid if your grammar’s off

Or your spelling’s not on cue,

You may not know what a sonnet is

You still can write a review,

And every race has a welcome here

For the world of the web is free,

We only ask that we see your face

On here, at WC.

This is great David! I enjoy the writing so much that I sometimes get carried away on the comments...I tend to be long winded and go overboard but it is so amazing to me, the talents of so many...sometimes I think those who refrain from commenting may think they are not talented enough to speak on poetry in considering meter or rhythm or rhyme...but it is not what is expected...just a note speaking of the readers enjoyment...you've placed a proper invitation with this poem...Bravo!

amen. I love this one. I do adore your storytelling but this one - yes, I feel this way too.

I should leave better reviews but sometimes I am at a loss as to what to say or how to say it. Thank you for the wake up.

I love that. Really profound and for some reason shocking. Thanks for sharing.

Well said. Screw it. I just write, and let the petals flow in the stream.

I know I myself need to work on giving better critisim, I tend to be far to nice and concerned with other's feelings, though I do try to tell them what i think they can work on to better their work. I just don't like to leave a review when I have nothing nice to say.

I think we are all a little guilty of not leaving a review every now and again.

A gentle nudge to the ribs, both of those of us who have read and appreciated
(AND reviewed!) your work for years, and unto those who have neither the
capacity to appreciate the sublime elegance of your verse, nor the wish to
learn to. When people who think at a third-form level encounter a Doctoral
thesis in Poetic structure, they linger not long, alas. For my part, I will strive
to be more observant, even if it means having to double dip into my adjectival
pool. Accept my apology.

It's a valid question. I will say if I read a poem that I don't like I very often do not review it because people are so sensitive about critical feedback. I also tend to stay in my little bubble of friends. But when a title grabs me and the poem pulls me in a few words is the least I can do. I shall try to be more diligent about leaving something behind. What really perplexes me is when someone puts your poem in their library but leaves not a word.

I'm sure, in your case, that the poetry is so profound that it leaves most people speechless. :-)

Seriously, I think we've all wondered the same.

Your poem is like a sparkling glass of bubbly, raised on high, with a smile and a cheer. A request is being made, but with a lightness and gaiety of heart.
