The Final VoyageA Poem by Scott Wolfskill2nd poem in the album Plea from the Dark, written 5/5/14.White
clouds. A cooling
breeze. Blue sky. The calm
sea.
Under
promising skies I set sail Across waters
open and clear. I did not
consider if I would fail; In my heart
was no room for fear.
I sailed
toward a bright beam of light And my
course was unhindered and true. But mist
came upon the waters that night The skies,
now black, yet once blue.
That fading
light I still strove to see But in my
heart grew echoes of doubt. Savage
storms and waters raged upon me The meaning
of it I could not find out.
As the
torrent ensued I began to realize The light I
once saw never was. With each
trial I feared I would capsize; Night after
night I searched for life’s cause.
In the end
resistance proved futile; Any hope I
once had was now dead. There was no
use living in denial; I was held
down by a burden of lead.
The bow
dipped beneath those cruel waters at last As I
embraced the ship’s impending wreck. A lightning
bolt struck down the splintering mast And it came
crashing upon my frail neck.
Dark skies. Blue waters
turned red. Unrelenting
storms. The final
voyage. © 2015 Scott WolfskillReviews
