Sky People and the Red Earth

Sky People and the Red Earth

A Poem by David Smothers

Spirits float in the sky
Chindi dancing by
Kokapelli plays his tune
Kachinas on the Mesa
My passage through the land of the Hogan
Reveal to me the mystery of this land
Give me courage
Náhookos to the Ha’a’aah
Eastward to a New Beginning

Faded structures of a day gone by
Lonely windmills work to serve their Masters
In the land of the people of the Colorado
The once strangers Who now and have it this Great Land
The Dine'e
Amongst the millions that pass by
They have stayed

The parchment of the images of their memory
Saddle tight
Canteen full of water
My four-legged friend weary
I move towards the origins of my people
I will ride forward with resolve
Another day in my wilderness

I shall meet the people of the sky
I will embrace their ways
They will show me how to draw water from the stone
To rise the corn mother out of the ashes
We will dance around the Council fire of our ancestors
We will honor our Creator and those who have gone before
I am called by the four winds
I am adopted by the red earth

Guide us o ancients
Keep straight my ways, Great One
Take me home
