I want to be that guy...A Poem by David Smothers
We chase every shiny object.
We chase every breaking wave. And for what? What does it yield? More chasing? More expended energy, But for what end? Happiness? Huh! No, more discontent. So what is the equation of happiness? We are born with nothing and die with nothing. When we peak in life, and we all do, Then what? A downhill slide unto death? As the stripes of this life cover our face, The darkest hairs are replaced with white strands of wisdom, What have we learned? Perhaps, it is that love and charity matter most. The mark that we leave on this planet, The legacy of change, The new history for our future generations, The shift. The shift of paradigm that has generational impact. I want to be that guy. That guy that my descendants talk about. The guy that they point to and say, "He taught us love, and charity." I don't want a legacy built upon wealth, Upon greed, Upon money, Upon broken relationships, Upon memories of a man who did not love. Native people have always looked at the 8th generation as the beginning A shift. Seven generations from me, I want to be that shift. This is the legacy I desire. I want to teach love, and charity, As the new language of my culture. I want to be that guy. Yeah. That guy. © 2015 David SmothersAuthor's Note
