They Made Us Monsters

They Made Us Monsters

A Poem by David Smothers
"

From the mind of a veteran

"
They made us monsters
Somehow saying thank you makes it better
We willingly walked into fire
With no assurance of our own safety
The things we saw
The things we experienced
Embracing death
Embracing fear
As though we had some control over any of it
When chaos is the normal
Coming back becomes it's own
Seared and scarred
Broken and deformed
How do we reclaim the life we lost?
They made us monsters

This was an interesting poem. It says a lot about how experiences and people deeply affect us.

This poem comes deep from the heart of painful experience, visual without any fancy technical additions. The title really got my attention and the words within describe very harsh experiences.
