A Poem by David M Pitchford
"

Just something to prime the pump . . .

"

051608

It began early, another hango-

ver from last night's wine, likely the second

bottle did it. But it could have been that

second three-finger shot of Bushmills and

the Guinness chaser. Or perhaps it is

merely the linger of this perennial

sinus infection . . . but the nausea

contraindicates sinuses. So, wine.

And yet, the morning was bright and I feel

better than I have in days, just a bit

less focused, and shamefully unable

to rhyme at lines' ends. I guess that's okay

though, since American verse is so free

and liberated. Yes, more wine, thank you.

Thanks for the review! :-)
It seems to me a condition of being human that we are quite full of contradictions. I ponder that constantly. With or without wine. There is something cathartic about certain hangovers; seems to be connected to the mood of the drinking. Drinking in celebration more often results in the cathartic hangover, while drinking to avoid or drown anxiety or depression tends to just leave one feeling rather pathetic the next day.
Thankfully, poetry rarely leads to a hangover ;-)
Bushmills is a brand of Irish whiskey, and Guiness is one of the best stouts (dark, thick beer).
Wine is much healthier.

haha-I believe you primed the pump with wine. I am not familiar with the names of the liguor you mention but I think starting out with a hangover or sinus infection and ending with the line that you feel better than you have in days makes me think you REALLY felt bad for a while-it is self contradictory. I would ponder that.
