The Challenge

The Challenge

A Chapter by Dave Brown

Having my first poetic challenge

Was initially, a shock

And I realized it meant

I’d need to engage in, some kina talk

So, to interview Slugs and Spiders

I took a garden walk

There I found Slugs and Spiders

Once felt they were shortchanged

Thinking that if they’d a choice

They’d like their lives rearranged

With one confined to a web

And the other glorping around

One regularly squished

The other, often toilet drowned

About a change in identity

I was told that

They’d both gone to expound

Addressing the guy in the sky

With a change in ID request

To be reconfigured as whatever

Could pass the acceptability test

But he had replied

Who would eat

Those yummy fly butts

Or feast upon the finest of

Hosta cold cuts

The big guy then explained

How everything has its place

Even tho’ you each

Have one extremely ugly face

You are each members

Of a different, but important race

Then upon reflection

Their situation, they carefully addressed

And after doing so

Both withdrew their request

With each realizing

What they were, was for the best

With one going back to eating Hosta’s

And the other

With black Fly butts

Was happily blessed

Delightful,. whimsical and yet with a very good lesson. Love the black widow pic, I occasionally have one of them in the house, they are quite docile if handled gently. Mostly I have the granddaddy long legs and cellar spiders, with the long, ultra thin, graceful legs. The ones in the kitchen recognize me and sometimes venture out on their webs to see me when I get near. I used to name them but they live for such a short time that I could not keep a fresh supply of polite names for them. Your poem reminds me of the old English hymn,
All things bright and beautiful,
All creatures great and small,
All things wise and wonderful:
The Lord God made them all
