Near Nothing At All

Near Nothing At All

A Poem by David O Whalen (O Haolin in Celtic)
"

It's about matter

"
One’s life is no more or less
Than an hourglass made flesh

Each grain of sand
But a heartbeat of man

Each breath a small death
In the end…

We’re no more than metronomes
Fashioned from flesh and bones

Mere measure of mortality
No more…No less

We’re no more than photons
Mere flashes of light

No more than a meteor’s
Brief flight in the night

A minute component
An atom at best

No more than an hourglass
…Made flesh…

I enjoyed the precision, unpretentiousness and simplicity of this piece.
It flowed trippingly off the tongue--always the best test!
So many of these sorts of forays into the old-fashioned, straight-ahead declarative couplet
are marred by over-reaching blandness, imho. It's so easy to state the obvious with a sense of discovery, I fear.
Yet, I did not flinch once or feel a rush of insulin.
A solid piece of writing!
Thank you
