Reluctant Rising

Reluctant Rising

A Poem by David O Whalen (O Haolin in Celtic)
"

The body says "get up!" The mind says "don' wanna'!

"
Bright the dawning
Morning light
Dim the spirit
That dwells within

The hand upraised
The lids squeezed tight
To lower light’s limit
Allowed within

The light unpraised
The mood not right
What should be isn’t
A silent din

Yet the day must be faced
Tho’ it takes all one’s might
One must not fear it
The day demands to begin

Eyelids slowly surrender and raise…
Hand slowly lowers…allows in the light
The mind starts to permit
And process the light again

Mood still smothered ‘neath somber haze
One  gives up the morning fight
Nocturnal battle… night now must quit
The night must give in
…day demands to begin…

Some people bound out of bed, eager to face the day.Others, like you, come awake a little at a time. I am somewhere between this, being a fatalist when it comes to morning. There is is. And I have cats to feed.

no, not just you...and here we have two entities fighting against the day....the sleepy poet and the night that does not want to go gently into that good day...

second line i read as "morning's light"---

i quite like this piece because it is more than just the idea of facing one day...waking up...it is about life and how it gets so hard to face sometimes that we resort to sleep for escape...living in dreams seems easier...

nicely done,

j.
