In the shade on a day of sunA Poem by David MatthewHooray for Helios, singing sun songs That all people can drench up with dull ears. Deckchairs and cocktails, poolside paradise, But not for me. A freckled or frizzled forecast, It depends on the sun soaked skin-ward; Inward, beware of cancer, the blind mole. I’ll be ok. Greedy globs of sunscreen, ice-cream Melting, about to topple and tease Hungry wasps and bees, But it’s mopped up. In my nook, on my lap a book, But I’m reading people, While my frail trace-paper dermis hides Like a hermit. Hooray for Helios, blaring at bathers Waves of comeliness, but now My shaded loneliness Is all the worse. © 2010 David MatthewReviews
