We Stand in the Middle of a Room

We Stand in the Middle of a Room

A Poem by David Jones

We stand in the middle of a room
Men, Women and Children.
Little Children, Young Men,
Fathers,
Mothers.
Everywhere there can be heard 'Amen!'
As the preacher stands
Holding his book and saying,
"This is the Word of the Lord!"
Thanks be to God.

We raise up our hands
Clenched in fists shouting
"Rise up, O Lord"
A song about Him crushing
The evildoer in his tracks
We pray for the undoing
Of Satan's vile works.
We have all done these
Works of the flesh
Such as murder,
Such as adultery,
Such as thievery,
Such as gluttony,
Such as immorality,
Such as idolatry,
Such as hatred,
Such as heresies,
Such as covetousness,
Such as lasciviousness.
Of all these we are guilty.

Why do You let us stand
To shout praises to You?
We are but nothing without You!
This is my short prayer:
Create in us humble and contrite hearts
That love with all we can
And despise the evil within!
Call to this world vile,
With your beautiful Son!
