In the year 2121, Earth discovered multiple life forms on newly found planets throughout the Milky Way. Most planets stayed neutral and out of Earth’s affairs. There were only two that did not. Chaoknia, the planet of storms, chose to go to war with Earth, believing that they were superior to humans. Zarkae, however, chose to ally themselves with Earth, believing that they could create peace among their people and learn from each other’s pasts and cultures. The planet Zarkae was always peaceful. There was never any natural disasters, or war. Its lands were of vibrant colors, their life glowing in neon. Nature was one with civilization. Houses were made into trees and rocks, blending in perfectly with the scenery.

The people of Zarkae also blended with nature. They take on traits of wild animals, most commonly with hunter instincts although they are vegetarians. There are the lupus Zarkaens, the vulpes Zarkaens (also known as Kitsune), and the felis Zarkaens. They live in harmony, never seeing any evil in life. Their hair ranges in shades such as purples or blue to yellow or greens. Their souls glow with inner power and influence the color of their skin. There is no racism and no discrimination of skin tones. Their soul color is based off of their aura. Aura is the life-core of all Zarkaens. It is the essence of their existence and the colors portray their inner personality. Those with blue skin are the intelligent ones; those with red skin are the passionate believers, and so on with all the colors of the rainbow. To see, they did not rely on their eyes, therefore they had no pupils. They saw using the aura of all living things around them, and the nonliving as well. Auras left a mark, even after death, resulting in the Zarkaens being able to see nonliving objects. All was well on Zarkae, especially for one family in particular.

The Clarke family consisted of a husband and wife and their two children. They were a rare family on Zarkae, for the father and son were both of human descent. The father moved to Zarkae with his son Jason to learn of their planet’s natural state. He soon met and fell in love with a young kitsune. Together they bore a child of the two races, having the first ever to be born of human and Zarkaen decent. Blayze Clarke, with her raven purple hair, tinted yellow skin, and arctic fox ears as well as tail, grew up all alone with but only one friend. Although she had one friend, her family loved her very much, especially her brother. They grew close with age, resulting in a protective relationship between them. Their lives were perfect on Zarkae as they lived harmoniously among the society that cherished all good in life. Unfortunately, not all things can stay perfect forever, and sooner than planned, Zarkae lost its perfection.

Chaoknia, being at war with Earth, attacked Zarkae and took it over. All civilization of the planet was captured and killed. Chaos devoured all hope of life as those who could not run away were massacred on the streets. Blayze’s mother was caught in the confusion and her life was taken. Escape was almost impossible as the soldiers of Chaoknia patrolled the streets for any survivors. Her father took her and her brother back to live on Earth, escaping with only three other families, including Blayze’s childhood friend. Life from then on had never been the same for Blayze, and her misfortunes had only just begun…

* * *

“Blayze, over here!” a petite voice called from across the cafeteria.

A short girl with raven hair raised her head at the sound of the voice. Her pupil-less ice blue eyes stared at the person who called her name, seeing only a cloud of blue aura. She slowly started her way over to the cloud, when three blurs clouded veiled her vision.

“Where do you think you’re going, freak?” a large girl asked.

Her two accomplices laughed as if on cue. Their red auras blended together, almost making them seem one to Blayze’s eyes, but she knew better than to trust the colors.

“Leave me alone, please.” Blayze meekly commanded keeping her head hung low.

Rainbow shadows surrounded the three red blurs and whispers drowned the half Zarkaen’s fox ears. Her tail twitched in terror, betraying her by showing her inner emotion. The large girl pushed Blayze into a lunch table, causing her yellow-tinted skin to bruise. She couldn’t see as the three red outlines took their turn hitting her.

“Stop it!” the petite voice yelled out.

Another Zarkaen stood in the middle of the brawl, the hair on her cattail sticking up. She was furious, everyone could tell. However, she was too weak to stand up to the school bullies. Scanning the crowds, she cam across a certain boy.

“Jason! Help! They’re hurting Blayze!”

The boy looked over to the fight. Sighing, he stood and advanced over to Blayze, who was crying on the floor.

“J-jase?” she wiped away her tears and stood up to face her brother.

“Stop crying.” He said coldly, and then he turned to glare at the three antagonists.

“Leave her alone. Pick on someone worthy enough.”

Everyone surrounding the scene started to whisper. Jason was always known for protecting his sister. He was her knight, and he never once was cruel to her. The felis Zarkaen hissed in shock. Jason turned to her and glared.

“Oh shut up, Rino.”

And Rino did just that. Blayze, confused and hurt, looked from her only friend to her older brother. Something was different. His aura was a darker green than usual. Rino glared at Jason. She was boiling with fury. Blayze was torn with hurt. What happened to the brother that was always there for her?

Rino patted Blayze on the head, “It’s okay sweetie, he’s just P.M.S.’ing.”

Jason just glared and went back to his table. As he walked off, Blayze studies his shifted aura. She wondered if it had to do with their dad’s new job, serving the world in this war against Chaoknia. Blayze and Rino went to their table in the far corner. After school study halls were mandatory on Tuesdays and Fridays in the school cafeteria. It was one of the things Blayze disliked most, other than wind chimes and black licorice.

The day dragged on for what seemed like forever. Rino and Blayze did their homework in silence as Blayze’s mind wrapped around the oddity of Jason’s darker aura. She knew life at home would be different, and she feared for her sanity. Home was the safest place she knew, and suddenly she felt as if she’d lost it to some dark essence called discrimination. Jason was growing up, she could tell, and not in a good way. Their school was filled with humans who hated half-breeds, and even aliens. They were all pompous jerks, and Jason was turning into one of them.

As the two siblings walked home together, stillness surrounded them like oxygen. Blayze wanted to ask what was wrong, but she knew not to cross that boundary. Their father wasn’t home when they arrived. He never was. Jason went off to watch television as Blaze checked the mail. There was a letter for her and her brother; from their father.

“Jase…?” she called out, her voice shaking. “Jason get in here, please.”

He sauntered in yawning, “What?”

Blayze showed him the letter and he snatched it from her hands, “What is this?”

She watched as he ripped open the envelope and read the letter. His green aura once more seemed to grow darker. Was it from rage? Jason turned to his sister, eyes glazed with hatred, “This is all your fault!”

And with that Blayze hit the ground, the heat of her brother’s palm still on her left cheek. She cowered in fear as her brother lifted her by the arm, “He’s going to die and it’s all your fault!”

She felt the shock overwhelm her as tears streamed down her face, stinging where he had hit her. This anger could only mean one thing. Father was in Zarkae. Why else would Jason be blaming her? It was her home planet, her territory. Jason dropped her and stormed out of the house. After three minutes, Blayze let out a soft whimper. His anger scared her more than anything, and his aura, even darker that before, had her worried sick. Crawling slowly, she advanced on the note her father wrote. She picked it up from where Jason had dropped it and read the fine print. The words played like a record in her head, even after she let go of the paper and it floated back to the floor.

The weeks went on in a whirl of color. Every day their father was gone her brother would yell at her, hit her, then storm out of the house for a few hours before coming home to sleep. Every day their father was gone, Blayze’s skin looked more purple than yellow. She wore long sleeves, even though the weather was extremely warm. Rino worried over her, holding Blayze as she silently cried in after school study. Everything went downhill in Blayze’s life, and she couldn’t take it. It all went spiraling down until one day it hit rock bottom.

Blayze checked the mail like everyday. As she walked into the living room, checking over the envelopes, she froze in her spot.

“What is it?” Jason’s voice called.

She looked from the letter, up to the dark green aurora that was her brother. He ripped the letter from her hands like all the others, reading and re-reading it to make sure he didn’t miss a thing. Blayze knew that what the letter said, she had skimmed it before he took it from her. Their father was captured on Zarkae. She prepared herself, for his fist to hit her but felt nothing. He had dropped the letter and was now advancing towards her. Blayze knew he would hit her again and again but for now he was lost in his own mind and he hit her just once with great force, Then he was gone like all the other times before. She waited three minutes then crawled to the phone to call Rino.

“Rino, I need you” she said holding back tears.

“What’s wrong Blayze?”

“He’s been captured. They have him on Zarkae. We need to go after him. I need to get him back.”

Before Blayze could stop herself, she felt the tears fall from her eyes and everything seemed darker. She heard the phone beeping in her ear and knew Rino was on the way over.

When Rino arrived, Blayze was tenderly holding her face, where Jason hade made contact with his fist.

“Oh my god, Blayze!” Rino cried out, “What happened to your face?”

New tears swelled in Blayze’s eyes as she explained her brother’s anger. Rino cradled her for a moment, letting Blayze’s tear soak her shirt.

“We need to save him Rino. I need to save him…”

Rino looked started, “are you crazy? You can’t go to Zarkae! They’ll kill you!”

“There’s no other way,” Blaze cried, “If I don’t save him, the Chaoknians will murder him. I need my father back. My brother…”

She paused for what seemed to be a lifetime, unable to finish her sentence. Rino gave her a concerned look. The silence was almost too unbearable as Blayze watched Rino’s blue aura sway in anticipation.

“I’ve made up my mind.” Blayze whispered, “Will you help me?”

Rino’s tail twitched from nervousness. If they got caught, she’d be in major trouble. If Blayze went there, she could die. Hopelessness swallowed Rino, despite her strong look as she replied, “I will.”

“Then we’ll break into the base tonight and I’ll take the first rocket I see.”

Rino was about to refute, but she saw it would be a waste of breath. Instead tended to Blayze’s purple face, helping the swelling go down.

At midnight, the two Zarkaen girls snuck their way to the base camp where the army’s rckets were kept. Blayze stumbled along the walls, her mind preoccupied. Her brother had not come home home at all that night, and she was worried for him. Rino looked to Blayze and gave her the signal. No one was around. They ran up to the closest rocket and Blayze climbed inside.

“If I don’t come back in two weeks, let Jason know what I’ve done.” Blayze requested.

“And if Jason never comes home?”

Blayze felt the weight of the question in the air around them, “Then wait for me.”

Rino nodded her head slowly. She watched as Blayze left Earth and the safe haven of their ozone layer, off until the rocket’s aura could not be seen.

Blayze let her mind wander. She wondered what Zarkae looked like now. Last she had seen it, it was beautiful and full of colors. She hoped it would look the same, although she knew it would lack other Zarkaens. She would stand out like a sore thumb. Blayze came up with many ways to sneak by. She knew all the dark, unseen spots of her planet, and hoped the Chaoknians did not discover them.

After what felt like an eternity, a planet came into view. Its aura was dull, but Blayze could tell it was home. As the rocket was pulled into the gravitational pull of the planet, speed started to pick up. Increasing at a dangerous rate, she attempted to slow it down but did not know how. The rocket crashed on the rocky surface of Zarkae’s mountains, and Blayze was caught under a piece of the metal. She tried to climb out, but her attempts were futile. Panic swallowed her as she jolted around, trying to get free. Not realizing it, she was making a lot of noise.

“Who’s out there?” a voice called.

Blayze froze, fear welling up inside her. A Chaoknian boy soldier came into view his yellow aura blinding bright in the dullness of Zarkae.

“I know you’re out there, show yourself.” His voice was like honey.

Blayze swallowed the scream in her throat and whimpered, “H-help.”

The Chaoknian boy saw Blayze, trapped beneath the rocket’s remains, and ran over to help. When he pulled her free, he spotted her ears and tail.

“You’re a… Zarkaen?”

She stood with caution, eyeing his claws.

“Wow…” he exclaimed, circling her, “Never thought I’d see one of your kind in person.”

Blayze growled, as he got too close. His glowing yellow aura was stunning to Blayze, but she knew not to ever trust a Chaoknian. With teeth like sharks and claws like razors, they were born killers.

“So, what’s your name?”

“Blayze Clarke,” she spat.

“Whoa, easy now. I’m not going to hurt you. I did save you, after all.”

Blayze eyes him, “So you are not going to kill me? …But you’re a Chaoknian.”

He chuckled at her, his voice sounding musical.

“More like a rogue soldier. I’m a betrayer, called on for treachery. So now I’m helping the humans under close watch, or course. You see I have this tracker…”

“Hey!” Blayze cut off his rant, “What’s your name?”

He smiled at her, making her knees go week.

“The name is unpronounceable in your, or the humans, language. So they all call me Trey.”

Blayze’s face blushed, for no reason.

“So can you help me?” she asked.

“Help with what?”

Blayze explained her mission to Trey, and her agreed to help her. As they stealthily headed to the prison base, they talked about simple things. Blayze would not admit it, but she was falling hard for this boy. As the base was close in sight, a black aura caught Blayze’s attention.

“Trey, behind you!”

He turned around right as a masked soldier with a black aura attacked him. Assuming it was a Chaoknian, Trey fought with no mercy. Panicking, Blayze picked up a huge rock and slammed it against the soldier’s head. As the soldier collapsed, blood pooled around him.

“Whoa.” Trey stared at the dead body, “…the blood is red…that person was human.”

Shaking, Blayze removed the mask. Before her, Jason’s crushed in skull was exposed.

“Oh god!” she shrieked.

“What?” Trey asked, “Who is that?”

Blayze bursted into tears, “Brother…”

Trey, shocked, held Blayze in his arms. “Blayze…what’s your last name again? This human looks familiar.”

Between sobs she replied, “Clarke.”

Trey sighed, “Was your father’s name David?”

She nodded looking at him, confusing in her eyes.

“…He’s dead…killed last night. I’m sorry…”

Blayze bursted into more tears, staining his shirt. Her world was lost; she had nothing. Her brother was dead, her father was dead, and depression ate her up.

Trey held on to her, lulling her, “It’s okay, I’m here”

Blayze looked into his blue eyes. The world looked so bright and happy in the blue abyss.

“Let’s go home Blayze. Let me protect your heart from shattering.”

She nodded slowly, grasping on to the hope held in his eyes. Trey picked her up and headed off to the humans’ base so that they could go home.
