Chapter 1

Rain pelted down on the small town of Nightshade. The moon snuck a small bean of light through the cumulonimbus clouds that thundered in anger. It was 10:00 pm and all the streets were vacant. Not even a squirrel was out. All through the town was silence, except for the occasionally crackle of lightning touching ground. The streetlights were off and all the houses were dark, all but one. At the very corner of Puck Avenue, the Coffin Mansion’s lights illuminated the darkness.

The Coffin Mansion stands tall and ghostly, it’s very appearance on the verge of collapsing. Inside the upstairs window it a tall figure staring out. The figure is a lone girl of the age of 19. Her short, neon purple pixie hair stands out against the dark walls around her. As she stared out at the bushes, her blue eyes glistened with anticipation.

“Cassiopeida, still watching the bushes?” A voiced called from behind the girl.

Cassiopeida Coffin turned around and met with a pair of yellow eyes. These eyes belong to a skinny, lanky girl with medium, scruffy brown hair. The girl stood against the room’s entrance with her arms crossed.

“You do this every night after curfew; staring at those bushes. It’s like there’s something out there.” She said, leisurely walking over.

The girl stared over Cassiopeida’s shoulder at the bushes. Several silent moments passed, the bushes showing no sign of hidden secrets. Cassiopeida walked away from the window and sat down on the queen-sized bed. It had a deep purple silk comforter and blood red pillows.

“What brought you in here tonight, Artemisia.” Cassiopeida asked as her younger sister sat down beside her. Artemisia pushed her fur-like hair back and stared at her sister.

“It’s Desdemona. She won’t stop looking at their pictures. It’s weird. She hasn’t moved all day. She just sits there.”

“Oh great,” Cassiopeida sighed, “When will she just realize they’re never coming back?”

Artemisia glared slightly at her older sister. She knew Cassiopeida wasn’t too found of the youngest Coffin sister. Cassiopeida often referred to Desdemona as mental. Artemisia, on the other hand, was quite found of her younger sister’s imagination. She believed that it was healthy for Desdemona to let her thoughts carry her on through the hard times that she faced.

“Will you at least show a little bit of compassion towards Dessy? She is your sister, after all.” Artemisia stood and walked towards the entrance.

Cassiopeida stood with a sigh and followed suit, “Don’t remind me…”

The two sisters sauntered down the hall and turned to the room on the left. The walls were all a dark purple and the bed spread a vibrant lime green. The overhead light was shattered to pieces and the only light came from a lamp on a desk at which a small girl sat.

“Dessy?” Artemisia called to her sister.

The small girl, with her long silky black hair turned and stared to her sisters with stunning sea foam green eyes. She said nothing, just looking at them expectantly. The two elder sisters exchanged glances and then looked to Desdemona.

“Desdemona, stop staring at their picture already. They’re gone okay?” Cassiopeida said without compassion.

Artemisia elbowed her older sister in the ribs and walked over to where Desdemona sat. She stared at her sister’s soulless eyes and smiled sheepishly.

“Dessy, don’t mind Cassie, she’s just a b***h.” Artemisia sweetly said.

Cassiopeida glared at the back of Artemisia’s head and walked towards her younger sisters. She wasn’t too found of Dessy, but they were sisters. She couldn’t help but be slightly concerned, though she’d never show it. She placed a hand on Desdemona’s shoulder, and took the photo from her.

“Listen, Dess, mom and dad aren’t coming back. It’s been five years.” She said solemnly.

Artemisia petted Desdemona’s head and smiled, “Don’t be so sad, you still have us.”

Desdemona look to her two older sisters, then to the picture in Cassiopeida’s hand. She continued to stare at it, her mind wondering off to a far off land. She didn’t realize her sister’s were still talking until Cassiopeida nudged her slightly.

“Well aren’t you going to say anything?” she asked frustrated.

Artemisia looked to Cassiopeida harshly and then smiled at Desdemona. Desdemona just looked back and forth between he two of them before replying, “I’ve been to the zoo.”

Cassiopeida sighed loudly and dragged Artemisia to a corner, out of hearing range. “She’s mental, I tell you. Mental! It’s no wonder she doesn’t got any friends.”

Artemisia just glared, “You’re suppose to be the eldest, Cassie, so start acting like one.”

She walked back over to Desdemona and smiled, “Did you like the zoo, Dessy?”

Desdemona nodded her head and smiled at her sister. Then she looked to the corner of her room where Cassiopeida was still standing, looking angered. Desdemona looked to her picture in Cassiopeida’s hand. Cassiopeida was glaring at it and mumbling things to herself.

            “Cass?” Desdemona asked.

            “What?” Cassiopeida spat back.

“Desdemona walked over to her eldest sister and took back her picture, “You’re just as sane as I am.”

With that said, Desdemona left her sister and exited her room heading for the stairs.

Cassiopeida looked to Artemisia, absolutely disgusted. Artemisia just giggled and left the room for the comfort of her own.

Cassiopeida went back to her own room and stood at her window. Staring back out at the bushes she sighed, “They wouldn’t say that if they only knew what was happening…”

Well, I really think this is a very interesting beginning to what I think could be a very interesting story. It seemed like there was a connection to the one girl staring out into the dark and the other girl saying she went to the zoo. And then there's the picture of the dead parents. The old house and the Coffin last name.
And the ominous warning at the end. Makes for a very good mystery. Perhaps you'll write more and even
finish it. I think it would be worth it.
