She fought her guards all the way to the dungeon. She'd spent enough time down this crowded cellblock to know what to expect, and she wasn't going to make it easy for them. She was trained not to give up, beaten when she backed down. They knew this after years of watching her and witnessing her carnage, so even though she was too weak to do anything to her, they were careful to affix her hands behind her back with the strongest set of handcuffs in existence. They thrust her into the first empty cell they came upon, slammed the barred door in place and quickly activated the emergency force field. "No!" she screamed, desperately thrusting herself against the bars. "No, please!" Now that she was helpless, and safely out of reach, her guards began to laugh. "Not so frightening now, is she?" said one. The other shook his head. "She's little more than I child. There must be some mistake. This can't be the one the world fears so much." They turned and went away laughing, ignoring her desperate pleas. "No! Please! Please don't leave me in here! Please!" A door slammed at the end of the passage, echoing off the chrome walls. Her legs gave out beneath her and she sank to her knees. She took a couple deep, shaking breaths, and used the last of her strength to snap the chain linking the cuffs behind her. The cell was barely four feet by four feet, just large enough for her to curl up comfortably on the floor. But she didn't want to so she slouched against the wall and hugged her knees to her chest. She could feel the cold of the wall seeping through her shirt, and she shivered. She was so hungry. She couldn’t remember the last time she’d eaten, but judging by the hollowness in her stomach it must have been a while. That was their way to control her " feed her only when she was needed, or if she was going to do if they didn’t give her something. Neither of which was the case now, so she might as well try to ignore it. “How did it go?” The voice from the cell across from hers startled her, even though she half expected it. A figure hovered in the shadows behind the bars opposite, a ghostly silhouette against the darkness. “She didn’t take it very well, did she?” She shook her head. “Elmonzi doesn’t take “no” very lightly. She said a few days down here would straighten me out.” “On the bright side, you get to hang out with me,” the figure across the hall said. “Here, catch!” A fist-sized hole of blue flame appeared in the force field. A small hunk of bread flew through into the cell, and the hole vanished. “You must be hungry,” the figure added. “Sorry I don’t have anything better to give you.” “No, this is fine. Thank you!” The sight of the bread made her want to cry, and she snatched it up before anyone could come and take it away. As desperately as she wanted to devour the stale bread all at once, she refrained and forced herself to take small, even bites and allow each piece of stale dough to melt in her mouth. The rancid bitterness lingered in the back of her throat, but she didn't care. It was better than nothing, and gave her just enough energy to squeeze her hands out of the broken handcuffs. She tossed them away, and continued eating. The figure watched her, pity glistening in her eyes. “It’s terrible what they’re doing to you.” She glanced toward her friend’s shadow, bread crumbs dotting her face like freckles. “And it’s not terrible what they’re doing to you?” The figure chuckled softly. Doing anything too loud down here resulted in a beating. "I guess all of us deserve something better than this." She nodded as she finished the last of her bread. The times she was allowed out of her prison to do a job, she'd always envied those she saw -- normal people with normal lives going about their business, eating hearty meals together, holding hands, laughing as they walked together. "Do you ever wonder what it's like?" she asked her friend. "Not to be hungry or afraid? To be a normal Human?" “There is still hunger and fear in the Human world,” her friend said. “But it can’t be as bad as this.” She wrapped her arms around her knees again and rested her chin on them. "Sometimes, I'm tempted to run off and join them. I could do it, be Human." "We were Human once, you know," her companion replied. "That was such a long time ago." She ran a hand through the stubble remains of her hair. Their Captors kept cutting it short to remind her of her place. "It's a stupid dream, anyway. They'd track me down eventually. They always do." "No, it's not stupid," her companion said. "It's never stupid to dream. Who knows? It might come true someday." "You know what they're capable of," she said. "The whole galaxy's scared of them. No one would stand up to them, and that dream can't happen unless someone does." "Whoever said we can't?" her companion asked quietly. © 2015 DastaLouise19Author's Note
