The Sentinel

The Sentinel

A Poem by I C S Clark-Hogg
"

Dedicated to my son who fought in the gulf war 1990/1

"

THE SENTINEL.

I stand guard, the long night watches
In the silence: I feel, I see.
Slow passing time I'm waiting,
No bugle sounds for me.

At last the sun is rising
At my post: the cold, then searing heat.
I travel the route - ever onward,
Turning wheels and tramping feet.

I taste the sand between my teeth,
I share emotions: the fear, the pain.
Months passing by - I'm weary
Will there never be peace again?

I stand guard, the long night watches
Without weapons; no knife, no gun,
Only my love - I'm praying,
Please God, give me back my son.

A wonderfully written piece. The love between a mother and son as he stands alone on the fields of war, both wishing for piece, both standing sentinel for the other. I wonder if he felt your presence as he stood guard so many thousands of miles away, knowing that you were standing guard for him.

Beautifully written.

A wonderful writ. I hope you have shared this with him. It is an exceptional piece and the imagery is well done. Kudos to you on this. I think he might understand a piece I wrote called "Another Christmas Morn". Anyway, great work.
