The Dark Passenger

The Dark Passenger

A Poem by Curtis.Lenker

there is someone who follows me around
making my heart and soul his home
filling it with darkness and hatred
welcoming him as if a long lost brother
filling this void inside me
whispering thoughts no mortal should hear
this dark prince is always lurking
in the shadows where he belongs
making sure I never stray
to far from the darkness within
I have accepted this demon
I have lived with him since the beginning
of my downward spiral of hatred
my heart and soul blackened
my blood turned to poison
that flows through my veins
this dark prince has made me
who I am today, tomorrow and forever
everyone asks about the thoughts
that occur in my twisted head
if I let people in they might
see that I am who this
dark passenger wants me to be

I think everyone experiences the duality of soul. You give a great sense of what it's like to give into those impulses and become the very thing we didn't want to become. Technical point... "to far from the darkness within.." should be "too." You have a great, consistent voice that you carry through the piece from start to finish. Very interesting read.

Thank you for your lovely comment and Ill change that.
I had to read over this twice, it was so thought provoking. I like how it just flows with no breaks in between and like LauraKate said it's like the protagonist is being haunted and has just become complacent and in a way one with his or her demon. Very dark, ominous, and thought provoking. Great read.

Thanks for reading and your kind words.
This cuts so deep! It's like the protagonist is being haunted, could be likened to that terrible feeling of being followed and not being able to escape something in our nightmares. What I find really interesting about this is that the two are familiar like brothers. It sounds like a cycle of being able to temporarily rid yourself of the darkness but never being fully free, and eventually almost giving in towards the end of the poem. I really enjoyed this, looking forward to reading more from you!

A captivating read. I wonder whether the dark prince is he who represents the darkness within everyone.
