An empty candidate

An empty candidate

A Poem by Darryl Piercy

An Empty Candidate

Waking from a dream
The world I knew had changed
It seems that things were upside down
It all seemed very strange

A man he glared from the screen
That appeared in my bedroom
He spit and slammed his hand down hard
He was preaching doom and gloom

The message heard was mean and loud
Pierced painfully thru my ears.
It never stopped or so it seemed
To last for years and years.

Was I still sleeping or was this real
Did he really feel such hate
Or was this just new politics
An empty candidate

He’ll ban the Muslims and build the wall
He will put them in their place
Will we be next when that’s all done
Are we the chosen race

To be a woman may be a crime
Unless of course you’re pretty
The right to choose should never go
But if he’s in charge be ready

No cause or plan or platform
Just gloom and fear and hate
Nothing we can judge him by
An empty candidate

I thought perhaps that I should sleep
The conscious world too strange
But it is time we all wake up
And say no to this way of change

We can’t ignore this anymore
Thinking it is fate
For if not we will have in charge
An empty candidate.
