Is Being a Soldier Worth The PainA Poem by Darruesh EetraydesFinding yourself sometimes means losing yourself at the sametime. This is what i feltGraduated sitting on a couch wondering where I belong A commercial on t.v. saying they can make me army strong I signed up and after i finished all of my training i couldn't stop dreaming of the adventures that would be waiting Shipped off to afghanistan I thought i had it all planned My first mission i was to drive the convoy van All of our vehicles single file we cut a path down the road We were ordered to never ever slow As we drove by kids charged toward our vans In nothing but rags holding out open hands I thought about about the raid my comrades said the other day they did More than a few of these children are probably some of the victims kids It made me feel kind of sad and when some soldiers tossed out candy i felt sorta glad The superior officer said stop and now i know why its bad This little girl with big brown eyes and dirty matted hair Saw some candy and noticed that no kids were there She ran faster than the rest grabbed thecandy and felt so bold But she ran right in into the middle of our road Soldiers do exactly what they are told Oh why do we have to be so cold I was going to fast i couldn't steer away The thud sound when my car hit i still hear today When we got to base there was a death silence no one spoke No one could break the ice there was no mirth with any joke Whenever i get in car and begin to drive I look over see the little girl and feel dead inside She is the one thing i will never get out of my head The little girl with the beautiful smile and knowing im why she's dead
