The Launch

The Launch

A Chapter by Darrin-Carter

Having done the speech and taken a tour of the ship the captain sat in his room just off the command centre. The room was bare with minimal furnishings. A large desk with two chairs in-front of it and one large chair behind it where the captain sat were all that occupied the room. On the desk sat a screen linked into everything on-board the ship and back in the Space station. Next to the desk on the floor sat a box that the captain had requested be delivered up here from his quarters. Personal belongings to make the captain feel more at home. While the captain made his room more his own putting up his certificate of graduation, some photos of his family and a strange object the he looked upon as a good luck charm. A beeper sounded indicating someone wished to enter and see the captain. ' Enter ' Stewart said and the door swooshed open. First officer Trevor Tanner walked in and stood to attention in-front of the captains table. ' First officer Trevor Tanner reporting for duty captain ' he said. 'At ease Trevor ' the captain said ' before you do yourself an injury '. Making a joke to ease any tension and break the ice between the two men. 'Have a seat lieutenant ' the captain said as he finished off putting the few personal touches to his room. ' coffee ' the captain asked. 'Yes sure, white no sugar please' Trevor replied as the captain made his way over to the machine in the wall. Speaking to the machine the captain said ' Two coffee's white. One no sugar. One two sugars'. almost immediately 2 mugs appeared on the shelf and a voice said sugared one on right. It was the computer talking and as the captain took the coffees he said ' all this new technology is going to take some getting use too ' with both men having a little laugh at the captains comment. The men sat talking casually over there coffee getting to know a little about each other. After the coffee's had been finished first officer Tanner handed Stewart two devices saying that one was the details of the pre-checks that were under way and that the rest of the results would be with him in a few hours and the other device he said was details of all the crew to help the captain get aquinted with everyone a little easier.
