World of Silence

A poem about how I am hard of hearing.

 World of Silence

Everyday I watch the world around me.

In silence.

When I ask for people to repeat what they said, they say,"Never mind"

I cannot hear the sound of laughter or happiness, music, or the t.v. 

My world is full of nothingness. 

No sound. 

Just movement and colors.

People expect me to hear them.

They ask if I know sign language.

 I do not.

People treat me different.

I am just like everyone, but only I cannot hear.

I hear the voices with my hearing aid, but sometimes I cannot make out what people are saying.

Every minute without my hearing aids, I am left with nothing, but my thoughts, my fears, my hopes, and dreams.

No one can understand this silent world of mine.

No one knows what it's like not to hear your family, your friends, strangers.

And this world.

A silent world.

All I can hear is my own voice.

All I can hear.... is the sound of silence.

yeah this poem describes hard of hearing very well...sometimes i miss stuff cause i wasnt listening or i just hear a few words and want to know the rest but sometimes ppl would say never mind...so i guess i know how it kinda feels.

My dad was hard of hearing, it was devastating to him and to us as a family. So hard to communicate, all but the love we shared. You have written a beautiful poem. Thank you for sharing. Debileah
