Woeful Debt I Pay "A Tribute to the Veterans of War"

A Poem by Cristal Bridges
"

This was one of my poems published in my school's district anthology when I was in 8th grade. Enjoy.

"

A loved one's sorrorw,

A melancholy grief,

Suffocating pain,

Misfortune on one's part,

Woeful debt I pay.

A loss for words,

Sinful remorse,

Daring traps I set,

Unsheltered sadness,

Woeful debt I pay.

An open wound,

An open tomb,

Red cascading downward,

A dying breed we are,

Woeful debt I pay.

The world a tomb,

A graveyard of soldiers

fighting for their country,

My freedom stands,

Woeful debt I pay.

Woeful Debt I Pay ... The title alone represents so much more than the words alone could ever say. Our freedom stands, and we cannot begin to repay it, let alone know how great the debt is. I'm amazed that you had such reasoned sensibility at such a young age. Like me, you must have grown up really quick. Little time for being a child in the midst of chaos. This truly is a gift from one so young, to remember those who have fought and died for the freedoms we frequently recognize.
