Dumpster Puppy

Four puppies in a garbage bag not old enough to see,

left in a dumpster in the cold, a ruthless tragedy.

The smallest is the first to go, it's final breath is spent

the last thought he will ever know: the nauseating scent.

Three puppies in a garbage bag with one familiar smell

but this one moves no longer, turning cold from nose to tail.

With a gasp the second slips away, the cold too much to bear

her clouded eyes stop blinking and become an empty stare.

Two puppies in a garbage bag search for their mother's scent

their bellies full of nothing, and their energy is spent.

In darkness and in solitude where nobody can see

the Reaper comes to do his job, and claims his number three.

One puppy in a garbage bag, three corpses by his side

alone, he starts to realize the others all have died.

Not willing to accept defeat, and wanting yet to live

one final cry of hopelessness was all he had to give.

It echoes through the dumpster, and I thought that I could hear

the faint cry of a puppy who could sense that I was near

so I crawled into the dumpster in the hope that I could find

the source of whatever it was, that made it's final whine.

One man amidst the garbage bags, the stench, and falling snow

one layer removed at a time, my tears begin to flow

How could one be so thoughtless or so cruel to throw away

that loving little puppy that I rescued on that day?
