Forgotten Hero

Forgotten Hero

A Poem by Eric R
"

after the war...

"

Full sprint, gripping my gun

chest pounding from fear

blood and tears fly from my face

dodging shrapnel, spraying bullets

my boots splash through the mud

leaving footprints of war

brimming red with blood

Once a man, now a pawn

my orders bear the seal of greed

and the lust for power

I play my part as soldier

charging through burning smoke

hurdling dead friends

racing towards my doom

Missiles  resonate through the clouds

a hissing choir of imminent death

the world detonates

raining embers of flesh

the burned faces, the agony

forever etched in memory

The vivid images fade

I awake in my bed alone

my racing heartbeat echoing the rattling guns

just another nightmare

the aftermath of war, the internal pain

my soul trapped beneath hidden scars

abandoned, forsaken, a forgotten hero
