The Whispers Of Normandy

The Whispers Of Normandy

A Poem by DarkShines
"

This was written for a dear friend of mine who absolutely adores the Mass Effect game series. It's from the perspective of the crew and squadmates that stood beside Shepard throughout the trilogy.

"

When we were young

We gazed up at the endless stars

Dreaming of what may be

Then we grew

And found our places

And found our causes

With determination on our faces

We banded together and took to the sky

We never looked back

Unafraid to die

We took off eagerly

Down a long and dark path

Putting it all on the line

And committing to hold it

We gave it our all, we gave it our best

We gave it all up for the rest

But some never made it home

So that this evil could no longer roam

Our brothers and sisters won't ever die in vain

So long as we push on down the road

And carry on their name

Some nights are blacker than others

And hope seems just out of reach

But we hold together

Supported by his calm and speech

Then we saw the darkness start to part

And the tide begin to shift

As the strongest of us

Stood up and tore out the enemy's heart

We all felt lifted

Accomplished and endeared

Though we knew all too well

That the final war still neared

We gave it our all, we gave it our best

We gave it all up for the rest

But some never made it home

So that this evil could no longer roam

Then came the time

Then came the hour

When all that was predicted

Challenged our power

We stood together and watched that day

With the clouds darkened and the sky erased

We stood together and watched it all

As the final hammer began to fall

Millions of screams became one sound

And countless lives were lost

When they touched ground

We stood together at the end

And looked our adversary in the eye

With a courage that could never bend

And a will that could never die

We beat the odds

And held our place

All standing tall

In the ruins of the human race

A long cycle broken

A new beginning ahead

A destiny stolen

In the name of our righteous dead

-------

As the skies cleared

And society thrived

We carried on with no fear

And remembered those we left behind

As all those worlds they swore to protect

Built up from the ground of an almost end

We look to the stars and wonder where they went

And take to heart the message they sent

A teaching that implacable enemies

Can stand side by side and re-write their destinies

A bravery never before found

Drifts through the sky, quiet and low

Gracing our ears as a welcome sound

From a million voices, that will always grow

The whispers of Normandy

The last few stanzas then switches to the perspective of the billions of people they saved.

Long but this could have so many sagas to it. You use a lot of descriptive language and you show your emotions with no amends to be made. I was impressed with the honesty, vulnerability and the strength.
