Erica and Nathan July 5, 2009A Chapter by Dark Angel Reborn
Erica and Nathan July 5, 2009 Erica slammed the phone down, yet again. She thought for another few minutes, picked up the phone and dialed Elizabeth's number...again. Why the hell wasn't she answering? What was so important that she'd been ignoring Erica's calls all day? It went to the answering machine on the first ring. She pressed the F you button? Erica growing more and more frustrated by the second picked up the phone again. She was going to get to the bottom of this. What the hell did she do to Elizabeth to get ignored? Jason left her and her best friend was ignoring her calls? It was absolute bullshit. She must have done something, but what? Desperate for an answer, she called again. On the fourth ring someone answered. “Erica, please stop.” “Who is this?” she demanded. “It's Nathan. Will you please just...stop?” “Is Elizabeth mad at me?” Erica demanded. “You...didn't know?” Nathan asked, his voice trailing off. “How was I supposed to know? We haven't talked since Matt broke up with her.” “No...she's not mad at you Erica.” She could hear Nathans voice trail off and break. Was he crying? “Nathan, what happened?” She demanded again. “Elizabeth killed herself on Thursday.” “What..? Why? Why didn't she call anyone? Why didn't anyone stop her?” Erica rambled on and on, just like Elizabeth when she was trying to avoid the inevitable emotional break down. “Erica. Stop. Breathe,” Nathan interrupted. Erica took a deep breath and started to cry. “Where did we mess up?” She cried. “I thought Elizabeth wasn't like that anymore...” “No one saw it coming...” he said, trying to comfort her. He didn't even see it coming, the thought bitterly. “Nathan...why did she do it?” Erica sobbed. “I don't know...” He lied. He did know. He just felt like her not feeling like she was good enough for anyone was his fault. He should have tried to make her feel like she was enough but he had never realized she'd felt that strongly enough to die for it. “Will you come over?” Erica begged. “Please?” Nathan could practically hear her coming apart at the seams. He didn't want to get up and out of bed. He didn't want to go anywhere. He wanted to be alone but he was done with that. If someone needed something he could give, he would give it. “I'll be there in a little bit,” he agreed. He hung up the phone and put it back into his pocket. He had taken it the day he found her to call Matt and never gave it back. Her parents really didn't even care, or notice. He wondered when they'd shut the line off. Nathan got out of the shower and changed out of the clothes that he'd been wearing since he had found Elizabeth. His insides screamed in protest and his stomach clenched together as he thought of facing a world without her in it. The sun already looked duller, the sky already looked less blue. The grass seemed to have browned over the past few days. Everything was more lifeless without Elizabeth here to make it beautiful. It took him a few minutes of searching to realize that he'd left his keys in the ignition when he'd last come home. He'd hardly registered the drive out to Erica's. It felt as though one minute he was in his driveway, pulling himself out of another mental break down and the next, he was knocking on her door, fully composed and the shoulder to cry on. He couldn't even think of how many times he'd dropped everything to come to Elizabeth. He couldn't think of the fact that he wasn't able to save her. He felt like he was coming out of a daze when he realized that Erica was in his arms and the front of his shirt was soaked with black makeup. “I just don't know what to do...” she babbled. “I seriously think that I want to kill myself.” “Don't...” He whispered, “Don't talk like that.” “It's what I feel though.” “It's not what she'd want. Why do you think I'm still here?” he asked. In his mind he asked the same question. If she couldn't bother to stick around for him, why should he stay, just to make her happy? “I don't know why you're here. I don't know why she left. I don't know anything,” Erica whined. “I don't get any of this.” “She left a journal behind and some letters,” Nathan told her. “I haven't read any of it yet. You'll get a copy of the Journal and your letter at her funeral.” “When is it?” “The eleventh.” Erica burst into tears again and for the first time, someone other than Elizabeth saw Nathan cry. © 2009 Dark Angel Reborn |
