Loss

by ~TinyBat

One night I woke
Coming to consciousness
As my lover moved, gentle and lithe
In her sleep.

In her warm glow,
I kissed shoulders, no stranger to my lips
Wrapped an arm around,
Careful to curve under,
The fullness of her belly,
Our child,
My child,
Our future.

She smiles, secure in knowing it's me
Murmurs in her sleep
She says nothing but I understand
He kicked and she adjusts
Leaning against me to find a place that's comfortable
I know then I would do anything
To never see her smile fade
To always feel his life below my hand

One night I woke
Rousing from this dream
I knew this was the real world
Because my hand met only cold on her side of the bed
It takes me minutes to understand
My loss
Our Past
My Pain

Before I have to pace the floor again
There is no sleeping after these dreams
There is no living in the hours awake either
The questions never sleep either
Why was I so afraid
To Risk
To Hold on
To Stay?

I've walked away from every chance I've been given
A shining penny in the street
Worth more to the one who picked it up than to me
It's just not like they say in the movies
It's just not like they write in books
Sometimes, it just doesn't happen right
Sometimes there's just a man who gets by
Just barely
Knowing everyday he'll be alone.

I can truly feel the loss here, and that emotion is what drew me in closer and made me want to hear more. I love it, it is perfectly crafted and the words are perfectly arranged in such a way that the reader simply can't stop reading. It is amazing, keep writing!
