Night taught at school?A Chapter by Cecile
Honors Humanities
Bowers 27 April 2011 Night Yes is undoubtedly my answer! I 100% support the incorporation of Night, by Elie Wiesel into high school curriculum. The tragicness of what went on in these death camps around German during World War II is terrifying, and most importantly eye-opening. Teenagers today are way too caught up in their own problems, but honestly, they’re pretty petty compared to the experiences of the Jewish men, women and children during the Holocaust. This 100-ish page book makes them realize exactly how silly their daily problems are. Living without the Iphone 5, and missing out on one breakfast is NOTHING compared to the gruesome times these people lived in. I fully believe that Night is an excellent book, and without a doubt should be taught at school. The pain I experienced while reading this was undoubtedly powerful. Reading about these events, about the separation of families, and the death of thousands was very real for me. The truth is that high schoolers complain much too often, and they need to begin to accept what life hurdles at them in order to live as an adult. They should be thankful for what they have, and even for what they don’t. Even though they may not realize it, they are unbelievably lucky to be living in America, especially in the 21st century. In a way, Night dilutes the stresses and worries today in comparison to life in Nazi Germany. This is the reason I believe this book would fit into a high school curriculum. © 2011 Cecile |
