Jack MandelbaumA Chapter by Cecile
Jack Mandelbaum, as a child thought of the world as a happy place that would never change and that life would be a carefree adventure.
He had a father, mother, older sister, and younger brother. He lived in beautiful Gdynia, Poland on the shores of the Baltic Sea. Ships came from all over the world to deliver packages and letters. Jack liked to collect stamps from the letters and packages when they arrived from the ships. He loved his family so much that when the Nazis took over Poland (his home country) he took a job as a substitute worker. Men at a certain age where forced to do forced labor. They would repair sidewalks, shovel snow, pile up bricks, or anything the Nazis wanted them to do. So Jack would take mens place when they couldn’t work. Jack didn’t have to work because he was under the age men had to be to work. The Nazis didn’t care that he was working because he was just an extra man. Jack worked to earn a few pennies for his family so they could afford food, water and an apartment to live in. Later the Nazis split him from his family to work at camps. Since Jack kind of chose to go to the camps he had to live in them. Jack was a pretty nice guy so he helped a lot of people from dying. He and his friend where able to work as chefs (The best jobs) because the other chefs died. So they where able to be in a kitchen with a nice warm boiling pot of soup, a guard guarding them, and a whole bunch of food surrounding them. Once and awhile they would distract the guard and sneak some food in their pockets to share with some famished campers. Helping one person could have encouraged them to help other people by trying to need other people. Since Jack spared other people he probably made the states, countries, and cities a little bit larger than what they would be if Hitler killed a lot more people. If Jack Mandelbaum hadn’t lived, a lot of families’ wouldn’t have been made because Jack saved people from dying. No one would have known him. He wouldn’t have known everybody he does know. He wouldn’t have gotten married to his wife. His wife wouldn’t have gotten married to Jack. The last is that none of his kids would have been born, none of their kids would have been born, and so on. © 2010 Cecile |
