Z For ZachariahA Chapter by Cecile
The name of the book I read for my book report was Z for Zachariah. Robert C. O’ Brien wrote it. This is a science fiction book because it includes survival and has alternatives. I chose to read this book for the assignment because the description on the back sounded interesting.
The main character of Z for Zachariah was Ann Burden. In appearance she has greenish eyes and brown hair with some blond streaks. The personality of Ann can be described as scared, thoughtful, and smart. Ann was pretty cautious around John. She knew he could be dangerous, and she was careful. Another character in the story was John R. Loomis. I would describe him as a lonely person that worries about someone stealing his safe-suit. He was important in the story because he was the only other living person Ann knew was alive in the world. The setting of Z for Zachariah was in a valley somewhere in the south. It’s so remote it has its own climate. The date is now. The general mood or feeling created in the story was frightening, sad, and exciting. The author created this mood when John was trapping Ann. At the beginning of the story Ann was in the middle of a war and her parents went missing. Two other things that happened before the most exciting part or climax of the story was when Ann moved to the cave at the hill and when John was healed. He wasn’t sick anymore because the radiation poisoning only lasts for a certain matter of time. The problem or conflict the main character in the story faced was that John was guarding her house, the garden, the store, and almost everything Ann had. The problem was resolved when Ann ran away. At the end of the book Ann stole John’s radioactive-free safe-suit, and runs away hoping to find other people. In this book, Robert C. O’ Brien was trying to tell us that you can survive being alone. I figured this out because Ms Hayner told me. Another TV show that reminded me of this book was Jericho. It reminded me of this book because a town watches a nuclear bomb go off, and the town loses all contact with everybody else. When rain starts to fall, radiation poisoning spreads through the whole town. This TV show was better than Z for Zachariah it involves a lot more people, which makes everything more exciting. What I liked best in Z for Zachariah was that Ann had a store with a lot of supplies, a farm and a lake all to herself… well for a little while. However, it might have been better if she would have taken more items from the store. This book taught me that radiation poisoning is not good! If you had too much of it you would get sick and maybe die! But I did not like when Ann accidentally killed Faro, her dog. All things considered, I would recommend Z for Zachariah to other students because you don’t know what is coming up in the book. © 2010 Cecile |
