Hoot

Hoot

A Chapter by Cecile

Hoot

The story that I read was Hoot. It’s about a boy named Roy Eberhardt. He used to live in Montana, but now he lives in Florida. He moves a lot because of his dads job. He goes to Trace Middle School and is in sixth grade. He gets bullied on the school bus by a boy named Dana Matherson. Dana isn’t really smart so Roy isn’t very concerned.
While Dana was squishing Roys face against the bus’s window he noticed another boy, with blonde hair running besides the bus. Throughout the story he’s trying to find out who the mysterious kid is. Roy does find out who his stepsister is, though. Her name is Beatrice Leep. Her nickname is Beatrice the bear. She is known for that name because she is tough and is not really afraid of anything. She calls her step brother ‘Mullet Fingers’ because he can catch mullets (A type of fish) with his bare hands .Beatrice secretly takes care of her step brother, bringing him food, clothes, etc. Mullet fingers ran away from the military school his mom left him at. His mom doesn’t really care for him. Now he lives in the wild by himself ( with his sisters help).
A new pancake house is being built, but some mysterious things are happening. Foundation stakes are getting pulled out of their places, appearing and disappearing, and alligators are being spotted in the porter-potties.
A police officer called Officer Delinko tries to find out who is pulling these pranks, and why they are pulling them. (What kind of person is against pancakes?)
The reason that there are problems at the construction site is because owls are living there! They’re not normal owls though, they’re called Burrowing owls. They’re called Burrowing owls they live underground in holes. Mullet fingers does not want to cover the owls so he’s trying to protect them scaring the workers with his clever, but mean pranks.
Roy finds out that a file from a department is missing. The file showed that there was owls on the ground of the site that they couldn’t crush. But somebody stole is so it wouldn’t get in their way.
At the end of the book, Roy gets his classmates toto stand up with him to Mother Paula, herself. She isn’t so bad because when she finds out about the baby owls, she protests along with Roy. They built the pancake house someware else, and almost everybody is happy.
