Concrete Jungle

Concrete Jungle

A Poem by Danny Coykendall

Let me lead you through the jungle,

paved paths leading everywhere yet nowhere at all.

Trees, giant beings lost their sway in sharp winds,

towering over us like destroyers of light.

Blocking the sun, leaving us in darkness.

We travel in packs based on beliefs,

left behind by the supreme leaders.

Who shall we follow in our time of need?

Metal creatures swallow us and take us down crowded trails,

regurgitating us at our destination, only to repeat the feeding again.

The lions remain hidden as the nation is controlled by pigs.

Never full, always stuffing their faces,

feeding on the once shared wealth, greed fills their stomachs.

Our rivers run black with sickness and flow like sludge.

Smoke clouds the sky and visibility is limited,

we choke on the very air we breathe.

Intoxicated by corruption of the higher powers.

So take my hand and I'll lead the way to darkness,

forever cursed in the concrete jungle.
