A Treat

A Treat

A Poem by Danny Metcalfe

In the shop window, sweets like jewels in jars,
sparkle in the eye of the child, outside looking in.
The winter air tickles his ears, turning them as red as his scarf!
And the snow on the ground makes its way into the holes in his shoes.

He shivers like a musical note, out of tune with its environment.
Turning his head away, he leaves parts of a dream upon the window,
Marking it with anguish and a darkened hum.

He sees another child and his mother, exiting the shop.
Smiling, smugly, noses in the air
And off they went, feeling such non-lasting bliss.

Still yearning, he pushed his face against the window.
His eyes to his dream; mournful and tormented
And with no other choice,
Searched his nose for a treat.

This is very poignant and unlucky, sad that a poor child can't manage to have a delight to eat, while watching other take pleasure in it....you portray it so well and so vividly...well done!

A wonderful poem. The mind of a child. The children can still hope and dream. You create a situation with a sad ending. Hello Danny and thank you for sharing the amazing poetry.
