Shadow Masters

Shadow Masters

A Poem by DannyLynne Riley

 We are masters
at shadowing
our imperfections
to the world

We wear masks
of clever deception
wrapped in lies
of color and splendor

And it never dawns on us
that the imperfections
we work so hard
 at cloaking
are the very thing
that make us lovable
...and desirable

for when we strip away
all the glitter
the glitz
 and the glam
and stand
 naked
for the world to see
the ones left standing
next to us
are the ones truly worth
our love

you are that one
the only one
who knows the me
underneath
the mask

for you have witnessed
my ugly
and with your love
and acceptance
conjured beauty
out of this mess
of wreckage
and hope

This is what I was talking about before, unconditional love. You stated in your poem exactly what a person has to do in order to really embrace their partner child, mother, son ,daughter etc. Forgiveness with understanding and realizing that people are not perfect and mistakes are made. While not be pushed or stomped on or just taking advantage of. My love is pure not tainted by outside thoughts or desires when it comes to you baby . Great poem I love you dearly Ron

I really love this piece...you convey such a strong message with your beautiful words. The last stanza is great, love 'conjured beauty'...it is such an amazing feeling to have someone love you in the way in which you describe...to have someone love the "real" you, despite all your flaws and being able to take that mask off and be yourself is bliss....Nice write.

The concept is great. It reminds me of a quote from the late Havelock Ellis, "Absence of flaw in beauty, is itself a flaw." I'm a firm believer in everything you just said. I've tried to write pieces on this subject before, but always end up sounding cliche, so personally, I decided to let theory rest when it came to my own works, but Kudos. You definitely depicted an illusion of accepting and appreciating the dark side of the common person. My favorite line might be "conjured beauty." reminds me of a poem I wrote called "air brushed fantasy"

All in all, I love this poem, it's honest.
