But You Need Me

But You Need Me

A Poem by Danielle Renee

You come here to play guitar and sing
Depressing songs about lost love,
About the relationship you destroyed,
And you always fail to see what it does to me.
To see the pain that writes itself on my face,
The tears that threaten to spill, or how
My eyes avoid yours, or the fake smile
Plastered on my frozen lips.
It drives me insane to hear you
Sing of her blue eyes and how they never lied,
How she’d lay her head on your chest,
How her lips tasted, and how you shared sleeping bags in basements.
It drives me insane that I can’t have you,
That you will never see what we could be,
That I have sacrificed so much to help you.
I wish for once, you’d really, truly listen to the words I speak.

But you need a friend to help you,
So I’ll stay.
