Inferiority Complex

Inferiority Complex

A Poem by Danielle Olivia

As she sets the dinner table for

two

four

six

eight

“don’t forget the chicken and veal cutlets on each plate”

a salad to start

and a desert to follow

“ and don’t forget the wine for it is far easier to swallow”

Her dinner guest compliment her on the grandeur

And overall magnificent splendor

It is all due to her inferior gender

Look at her laugh and smile with all her superior feminine graces

Look at her as she tries to remember all her guests faces

With her brazier and  corset so tight she can barely breath

She makes it harder and harder to believe

That she is the inferior gender

As the men go into the great room for drinks and cigars

The women sweep into the parlor for tea and the occasional gossip

“Have you heard? Netherfield park has let at last!”

Could it not be possible that she is a mass murderer of some sort?

An executioner of the races?

Oh but not her with all her feminine graces

For she is the inferior gender

“Don’t laugh so loudly, for you shall make my poor wife faint”

For you see she is a porcelain doll so fragile and delicate

She is a Faberge egg decorated so exquisitely

She is glass figurine that breaks upon the touch

Because she is the inferior gender

She can read, write, play the piano and paint

She speaks with incredible poise and charm

She is quite accomplished most would say

But it is not her fault for she was brought up that way

Alas she is the inferior gender

Tomorrow she will invite her guests for tea at three

Once all is said and done at four she will usher them to the door

And with nothing else to do at five she will sit and knit

Since after all she is the inferior gender

Her life is filled with happiness and joy

Because after all she is just a porcelain toy

It is said that a woman should not have a single care

Other than what she looks like and what to wear

Because fortunately she is the inferior gender

this reminds me of the victorian ages where women were the ones to entertain and the men were the superior ones. this poem describes the state of things during a period of time where women were not respected as men were. shows how we've come a long way being strong women who won't be put down.. great poem. it was llike a history lesson.

Not much that can be added to this piece thought wise. Thank goodness we've learned enough to recognize talent and wisdom for where it lies and not for what gender it lies with. the first half of this piece is I think the stronger half and I esp. like this stanza:

"Look at her laugh and smile with all her superior feminine graces
Look at her as she tries to remember all her guests faces
With her brazier and corset so tight she can barely breath
She makes it harder and harder to believe"

It just flowed the best out of the entire piece in my opinion, although the whole poem was a good read.

Satirical piece of writing...woman a porcelain toy...you've done a great work here!
I wonder if you mocked at those genteel women from Jane Austen's time but definitely the poem speaks of all!

An excellent poem indeed!

Woman are the inferior gender only for foolish people. Woman teach love and have great responsibility in life. I did like the flow and the purpose of this poem. You made your point loud and clear. No weakness in this poem. Some wisdom can be learn if you desire from your words. A outstanding poem.
