Star Gazing: Scene 10

Star Gazing: Scene 10

A Screenplay by Daniel Contreras IV

Ext. Daniel’s Roof -- Night

Cut to Daniel sitting on the roof, staring at the little bag of heroin a few feet in front of him. He ponder’s for a couple second’s, and then reaches for the bag and begins to open it.

Ian
(From the Ground) Daniel?!... Daniel?!

Daniel quickly hides the heroin in his sock and lays down. Ian climbs the ladder and gets on the roof and notices Daniel sitting by him self.

Ian
Hey d********g, why don’t you answer when I call you.

Daniel
  Sorry, I was... napping.

Ian goes over and lays next to Daniel.

Ian
No, not now, ever. I’ve been calling you for like 3 weeks, you never answered.

Daniel
My bad. I’ve been busy lately.

Ian
Doing what? Napping on roofs? What’re you doing up here anyway?

Daniel
I got in a fight with Maggie.

Ian gets out a baggie of weed and a bowl and begins to pack it.

Ian
About what?

Daniel
I don’t know. She thinks I’m spending too much time with Spencer. But you hang out with him a lot.

Ian
I don’t hang out with him.

Daniel
You don’t?

Ian
No, that time you guys forced me to do coke is the only time I spent more than 10 minutes with him.

Daniel
Really?

Ian
Yeah, I buy from him, but that’s about it. I don’t wanna get to know him.

Ian sparks up the bowl and takes a hit. He passes it to Daniel.

Daniel
Why not? (He takes a hit)

Ian
You know Alex Ohlemacher?

Daniel
Yeah, he dropped out last year, didn’t he? Wonder how he’s doing now?

Ian
He’s selling heroin. He get’s from Spencer.

Daniel
How do you know?

Ian
I have his brother in PE.

Daniel
Really?

Ian
What’d you say to Maggie after she said you were spending to much time with Spencer.

Daniel
I told her I don’t tell her who she can and can’t hang out with.

Ian
(Takes another hit) Good one. So I’m guessing no good came outta that?

Daniel
She said I was a loser and a druggie.

Ian
Really? She said that?

Daniel
Basically.

Ian
She basically said that?

Daniel
Yeah, what right does she have to tell me I do too much. She smokes from time to time.

Ian
That little harlot. So is it over between you two?

Daniel
Yeah man... I think I’m gonna end it.

Ian
End what?

Daniel
(Looking at Ian stupefied)
Me and Maggie. She’s always on my case all the time, you know.

Ian
Yeah, but do you think it’d be worth it to break up with her. I mean, she’s been with you awhile, you know. She’s probly just scared for you.

Daniel
Scared? Why would she be scared?

Ian
I’m just gonna be straight up with you. You have been spending a lot of time with Spencer. You do do coke with him and his posse that goes around breaking into people’s houses stealing s**t. It is kind of scary to think what your doing. And your giving a bad name to people who smoke pot.

Daniel
How?

Ian
One of the first things people who don’t like pot say... It’s a gateway drug. I don’t mean to be a d****e, but your kind of a shinning example of that. I think Maggie deserves better than worrying about you running around with the wrong crowd, not knowing if you’re okay or not, you know... I worry.

Daniel
Whatever man, screw you.

Daniel lay’s down and stares up at the sky.

Daniel
I feel like there’s a storm cloud following me, you know... Been following me. Looming over my head, waiting for an opportunity to strike me down. The more I try to run away from it, the darker it gets. The more threatening it becomes... I fear so much that any minute, my world will come crashing down around me. I can barely get a moments sleep... It’s clear out tonight. we’re able to look at the sky, star gaze for a bit. Not worry about the storm brewing over head for a minute and just be at ease.

Ian takes a hit.

Ian
You come up with that yourself there, Hawthorne.

Daniel gets up and begins to walk away.

Ian
Where you going?

Daniels climbing down the ladder.

Daniel
 Getting my girl back.

Ian
(To himself, packing a bowl.)
You do that.
(Takes a hit)
Yeah.

Ian lays down.

Maggie’s House- Ext.-- Night

Daniel is pacing outside Maggie’s front yard.

Daniel
(Talking to himself)
Maggie... I’m sorry... You’re right, I am a druggie... I know you didn’t say that, but that’s what I think of myself... I’ll stop, I’ll never do drugs again... Spencer. He’s gone. I’ve stopped talking to him... Then we make up. Hug, I love you, kiss... Okay, I think I’m ready.

Daniel walks towards the front door to knock, when something in her window catches his eye. Cautiously, he creeps towards Maggie’s window. Now, perched outside her window, he looks in to see Maggie sitting alone on a couch. Then, Maggie turns and smiles as Dan, from before, sits next to her. This makes Daniel raise an eyebrow. Dan begins to poke Maggie flirtatiously. Maggie smiles and tells him to stop. Dan then goes in for a kiss, but just a peck. Maggie is turned back at first, but then kisses him back. Daniel, devastated and melancholy, turns away and begins to walk home as Dan and Maggie begin to make out.
