Scene II Setting: Early 70's/ Streets of Seattle (Pan out of the Coke bottle where we find a couple walking hand in hand down a sidewalk in the middle of a conversation.) Girl: I just don't understand why you want to be a doctor. I mean the money's good but that's not the only thing in life. What happened to your dreams of becoming a big rock star like Hendrix or Bob Dylan? Boy: Okay, 1: I'd say Bob Dylan is more folky than rock. 2: That ended when I found out I couldn't play guitar or sing to save my life, 3: are you crazy, rock stars make lots of money and 4: It's kind of late for that. I mean, I just graduated through Nursing school. And I don't know if I really want to be a doctor, but you know how my dad is, he'd disown me if I didn't. Girl: What, just because you dad and grandpa became successful doctors, it's your birth right to become one? (They walk past an Uncle Sam: I want you for the U.S. military sign. she stops) Oh my God, I can't believe this. They would do anything to get a couple more stooges for the war machine. Boy: Yeah, I don't know what I'd do if I was drafted. I'd probably be like my cousin Vince and dash up to Canada. (As he talks another boy runs into his shoulder and keeps going) Hey, watch it! (Two cops soon follow behind. The camera follows the other boy and two officers). Nambies Scene III Setting: Early 70's/ Streets of Seattle- Brooklyn, New York (Cut to front of the other boy running. Watch a couple seconds then pause the screen on him. Then shift scenery to six days ago at a pizzeria in Brooklyn. He is just finishing eating with two other guys and pays at the counter. He then walks outside with the two friends. They all look in their late teens, early twenties.) Other Boy: Hey, I'm just sayin', this war is being fought over nothing, you know. What do we care if some small country like Vietnam becomes Communist. We should fix our internal problems first. They don't even want us there anyway. Friend 1: I don't know Gil, I mean, North is a lost cause but the South seem like their fans of Democracy. (they walk past an Uncle Sam sign similar to the one before). Friend 2: Hey, look at this, Uncle Sam wants us. Hey Mack, maybe you could help him. (laugh) Really though, I don't know what I'd do if I got drafted, I might have to ditch it to Canada. Mack: Pansy. I wouldn't if I was you, securities tight at the border. The only place I heard that was kinda safe was out far west. Gil: Really, like what North Dakota? Mack: No, further, you heard about Johny right? John: What? What about me? Mack: No, not you, Parsons. Gil: What happened to him? Mack: Well, a couple weeks ago, Johny got the letter saying he was drafted. He didn't take it too well. He ended up boarding onto a truck with other draft dodgers on their way up to Toronto. But it was a set up. Now he has to do for years in a cell instead of Nam. John: I don't know, I might prefer jail. I mean, there's less chance of being killed. Mack: Yes, but a significantly higher chance of your butt-hole being the size of an orange when all's said and done (they arrive at Gil's house) Gil: You disgust me (while he laughs) I'll see you guys later (he waves and enters his house, a typical two floor brick house, as he enters he sees his dad watching the T.V., newspaper in hand). Hey dad (his dad gives a slight wave, paying more attention to the television. He walks further into the kitchen, where he sees his mother, washing dishes from dinner.) Hey mom. (He grabs an apple.) Mom: Hey babe, how was dinner? Gil: It was good (he takes a bite from the apple). I'm kinda tired, I'll see you tomorrow. Night. (He begins to walk away but is stoped by his mom.) Mom: Wait... You got a letter today. Gil: Oh yeah? Who's it from? (An awkward pause as she hands him the letter. He takes it from her hand and reads it's from the United States military. A stunned look comes over his face. Abruptly cut from a close up to him to the outside of a bus who's destination point reads Seattle, and Gil running and barely catching the bus before it takes off.) © 2011 Daniel Contreras IV |
