I'll Never Abandon You

I'll Never Abandon You

A Poem by Danielle Richard

Lost and drowning in the sea of hopelessness and desperation,

You try your hardest to swim to the surface and fill your lungs with fresh air.

You look to me, as if I’m the one to save you.

Silently, I look away, tears slowly filling my eyes.

Puzzled, you ask why I’m acting this way.

Slowly, I turn and say…

“This isn't who I am.

It isn't supposed to be this way.

You love me, but watch as I love another.

Go on. Be free.

Be as happy as you can be.

You’ll always have a place in my heart.

And I’ll never abandon you.”

Your warm embrace surrounds me as you say please don’t go.

I look in your eyes as they fill with tears.

Your heart longs for me, but my heart longs for him.

You lean in close, as if about to kiss me, and tell me you love me.

Once more, you tell me “please don’t go.”

I look into your tear filled eyes and once again say…

“This isn't who I am.

It isn't supposed to be this way.

You love me, but watch as I love another.

Go on. Be free.

Be as happy as you can be.

You’ll always have a place in my heart.”

And I’ll never abandon you.

Slowly, you turn away from me, hiding the tears running down your face.

I look at you as my heart begins to race.

Placing my hand on your shoulder, I beg you to please not cry.

You face me and say, “I can’t do this without you.

My life revolves around you and only you.”

Looking you in the eyes, I once again say…

“This isn't who I am.

It isn't supposed to be this way.

You love me, but watch as I love another.

Go on. Be free.

Be as happy as you can be.

You’ll always have a place in my heart.

And I’ll never abandon you.”

I hug you then slowly walk away.

Forever in my heart, you’ll never be alone.

You’re still my best friend, I promised to never abandon you.

Slowly I turn to you and say “I love you.”

As I walk away, tears fill my eyes.

I look up and say, “it had to be done.”
