Aura walked into her house after getting off of the school bus for winter break.  She was ready to begin her life anew for the next semester of ninth grade year.  First semester was harsh on her.  She was not used to public school.  Especially since she went to Christian schools all life.

The transition is what made it so bad.  She was already a year younger then all of her classmates and to have strong Christian morals was a thing that everyone hated.  In everyone else'ss mind, no one had the perfect life so there was no need to hide behind the religious mask.

Until she met Sabrina, she didn’t know how to fit in.

“I’m going to show you who you really are.”

At first Aura wanted to stay as far away from Sabrina.  She was completely different.  From the dark black spaghetti-like hair all the way down to her black combat boots.  She was different, but she fit in.  That’s what Aura wanted.  She wanted to belong.  Sabrina did just that made her feel she belonged more than anyone had ever done before.

As the semester went on, Aura gained more friends.  She even changed the way she dressed.  Black became her favorite color.  Everything that she changed went along with the darkness that she had been hiding from… her life.  The beatings that she had received for things that she had received for things that she began to believe was truly her fault increased.  Bruises became hidden by black make-up.

So much had changed in that one semester.  Aura was especially grateful to her friends.  They showed her she wasn’t so alone.  They too were dealing with the same problems at home.

“How do you deal with it?” Aura asked, trying in vain to hold back sobs.

“I just remember that my parents really love me and that this is how they show it,” Sabrina would tell her while she put on make-up to cover a black eye.

“But this is no way to show love.  Why not tell a counselor or someone?”

“I don’t want anything to happen to them.  I know you don’t want to get your mom in trouble.”

            “Well no..”

Truthfully, Aura didn’t want anything to happen to her mom.  Her mother needed her.  She needed protection to keep her choice in men from harming her.  Aura made it up in her mind to be a filter-like shield.  She would absorb the abuse from them and only allow the love and care to reach her.  If her mother hit her to punish her then it was what she deserved for not protecting her.

On the bus ride home, Aura thought hard and finalized everything she talked with Sabrina about that day.  The minute she walked through the doors of her house she would become the shield.  It was the least she could do to repay her mother for all the pain she caused.

As Aura turned the corner to her room, she froze as something that seemed like a shadow seeped under her door.  Not sure of what she’d seen, Aura instantly was sure Zack was involved.

“Zack! You’d better get out of my room right now or I’m going to tell mom you skipped school again.”

Aura was always the first to arrive home from school.  Zack was in the fifth grade and got out of school almost two hours after her.

Seeing that the daylight from her window was not shining under the door, she figured Zack must have been blocking it.

            “I’m not kidding!  Get out!”

“Aura pushed hard when she opened her door and almost fell face first as the door gave easily.

Aura rose to her feet holding her wrist and surveyed her room. The sun was shining brightly through her window and Zack was nowhere in sight.

“Zack?”  Aura called out even though somehow she knew she wouldn’t get an answer.

            Ramalama bang bang!

Aura jumped and looked around to see where the noise came from.  As she moved to pick up the phone from her nightstand, she noticed that someone was hiding under her blanket.

            Ramalama bang bang!

“Zack, come on.  This isn’t funny.”

The mass under the blanket didn’t respond.  Instead it shifted slightly in a sleepy motion.  Aura dropped her book bag and moved slowly towards her bed.

            Ramalama bang bang!

As she crept closer to the bed Aura noticed what seemed to be a piece of shadow coming from under her blanket near the floor.  It was the same thing she saw seep under the door.  Looking closer, she knew it wasn’t Zack.  The shadow seemed to flow along like a hidden breeze.

Swallowing hard to try and moisten her dry throat, Aura made every effort to turn and run away like her mind screamed at her to, but no such movement took place.  The only way she could describe it was like what should have been a mind numbing fear had become a magnetic type of fear drawing her in as she unwillingly removed the blanket from her bed.

            Ramalama bang bang!

Holding her breath, she threw the blanket on the floor. She gasped as she stared at herself as she slept on her bed.  Her cell phone was lying next to her glowing and ringing.

            Ramalama bang bang!

Before Aura could make sense of what was going on, she began to feel dizzy.  Darkness began to engulf her surroundings as the world began to weave back and forth.  Aura lost her footing and fell down, down, down into a black void

Aura has been hurt much by her mother abusing her, glad she has some friends at school. A very mysterious ending, makes a person wonder what's happening to Aura. Another creatively done chapter. Nicely done.

A very good chapter. The story was set-up properly and the ending was very good. You left a big opening for the next chapter. I like the story. look forward to reading more.

Aahh!!! What happens??? Hurry with the next chapter!

One thing here: Mascara won't cover a black eye. Base does (not very well, but enough), and so does powder, but not mascara. Just a thought...
