Martyr

Martyr

A Poem by A. M. Charles

I look at the world beyond my window and sigh
The future looms, it glistens, it blinds
My sanity dances on a string and I’m undone
Uncertainly chokes the words on my tongue.

Heartbeat echoes like an African drum
Stunted soul like a singer struck dumb
Unquenched love makes a vision of hell
Aching desires I never will tell.

Reach out and touch the tears that I bleed
Happily I bear the cross of your need
Forfeited joy for the sake of your soul
Your freedom demands eternity’s toll.

Thrice shadowed I dance like the devil fifteen
My eyes speak of the blindness I’ve seen
Tied to my destiny of walking this path
Weighed down by the stain of my impotent wrath.

Knowledge I seek flies out of my reach
Yet the lessons of life I expertly teach
Consumed I’ve been by agony’s pain
But victorious I stand, with pride I remain.
