Drop The "R" Word

Drop The "R" Word

A Poem by Tasha
"

I'm tired of people using this word in a negative way.

"
"That's so retarded!"

To you it seems like a 'normal' word
that people use out of anger,
to be funny,
or by accident
Never realizing what those words really mean
to someone in that predicament
Somebody else takes it offensively,
of course you don't say it to be mean
but only to get your point across,
 no matter what you think
you're still hurting another human being
You shouldn't put individuals down
to fit in with today's word choices
it's not fair to them...

SO LETS JUST...

DROP THE "R" WORD!!

Author's Note

 Tasha
I know this may not be my best piece but I am tired of people using the word retarded. It really bugs me because there are really people this way and they just use it for no reason.

A couple of months ago my school did a "Spread the word, to end the word" for the word, and I think more schools and business should use this...

Absolutely! Every time you say something is "retarded" you offend every person who is truly defined under that word.

re·tard·ed (r-tärdd)
adj.
1. Often Offensive Affected with mental retardation.
2. Occurring or developing later than desired or expected; delayed.

Is that what people mean when they say "thats retarded". Most of the time no, but if they cant repect others and know exactly what they are saying they shouldnt say it at all. Outstanding poem :) 10/10

I couldn't agree with you more. I am also against the use of "Gay" to mean stupid or unimportant. This was an excellent write

Thankyou for this, I agree, its a shame we human beings are always either looking up or down at other people, the world would be a nicer place if we could re educate our outlooks.

I never use the word "retarded". I prefer "the gifted innocents".

I definitely agree with you. I have two siblings that are special, and they have taught me more about enjoying life than you can imagine! They are such happy people and I wish I could be more like that! I loved that you wrote this poem to stop all the negativity that is really hurtful! Splendid write!

People never mean this in the true definition of the word. They mean "stupid" or "moronic", but they never mean it in the true meaning of the word. ALmost always, this is a hate word and you are spot on with it.

Good sentiment. People are careless with words, and selfish with their connotation ("but that's not what I meant - just get over it"). Kudos on matching predicament and accident, they work as a sort of rhyme and complimentary rhythm. Good job.

Next up: get all those sports teams to get rid of the "Redskins" nickname. ;)

I don't think it is the right piece for this, but this definitely does get the message across. I'm all for this. The controversy with this word is much in the same context as that of the word "gay." When people say things are "gay," I just want to slap them silly. Many of my closest friends are gay, and it hurts me to hear them say that.
