Bruised

Bruised

A Poem by Lydia Jamison

I knew I shouldn't have looked up,
Right when I knew I had enough,
And in fact it might have been too much
Of a good thing.
But what am I saying?
My heart has started breaking,
I've fallen to earth with a thud,
I've landed face down in the mud.
So this is what love
Had done so kindly for me.
It's given me gashes that need stitching,
Bruises that are aching,
And a heart that has started tearing.
I always knew that you were blind,
But even then you were kind.
I wish you could have seen inside
The stricken expression
That was always telling
The same story over and over again.
But those dreams are finished,
Replaced with nightmare and wishes
That will never be given.
In your future I see sunsets,
I see love and happiness.
What will ever become of this?
I'll stand in the background,
And not make a single sound.
I don't want to bring you down.
I just want for you to live
A full live and to give
All of your love to the ones who will
Be so lucky to have it.
To me, it won't be granted.
May you watch as I am landing,
But don't bother catching
The heart that will always be
Bruised.
