We're All in Closets

We're All in Closets

A Poem by Madison Black

perhaps this is all just a dream.
all of our mistakes,
skeletons,
    ...and regrets
are all just random synapses

    FIRING

in our never-ending stage of
R
E
M
and in the morning
we will all see that none of us were
really that careless or selfish.
we were never really that naive.
then we can rub the palms of our
hands against the sheets
of recognition...
    saying:

"what an odd dream.
    that doesn't even make sense.
        how strange."

perhaps every breath we take is just
a little louder outside of this dream.

(nightmare?) all the decisions we make
will one day be found on a book shelf.
"symbols and interpretations of dreams."
    AKA: your life.

cutting your hair means _____.
being jealous secretly means _____.
falling in love translates to _____.

perhaps this is all just a dream,
maybe none of us want to wake up
and start living.

"what an odd dream.
    that doesn't even make sense.
        what a terrible nightmare."

Wow...I'm not sure where to start with this piece. I loved the repetition of the dialog. I can't count how many times I've tried to reassure myself with that kind of mantra, but I get the deeper meaning as well. People don't want to acknowledge the faults in their past. So they hide them, attribute the memories to something like a bad dream.

oh, those stanzas in succession! I just love it! I love the vision of palms rubbing along the sheets, something I do when I'm terribly nervous after a bad dream.

only suggestion I have is "FIRING"....I am not sure if that fits the flow quite rightly. Of course, that is a matter of opinion, and it's wonderful as-is. Nice write.
